Cool Costume of the Week for 6/25/2010

June 24, 2010

This week’s cool costume sticks to theme of most of our recent updates, Toy Story 3. This homemade Buzz Lightyear costume is an impressive replica of the our favorite Space Ranger; the chest piece look great for a do-it yourself project. I like that the ranger outfit has a bulky look, which many of the store-bought Buzz Lightyear costumes are lacking. As an added bonus, this week’s costume also includes a step-by-step guide on how to reproduce it yourself. Here are some pictures for your viewing pleasure.

This is a really cool costume not only because it represents the character well, but also because you could make it yourself. Congratulations to seamster for putting together such a great costume for his kids.

We’ve got a runner up for the Cool Costume of the Week with this professionally done Buzz costume.

June 22, 2010

Today was a sunny day in Seattle, on of the first, and hopefully there will be plenty more before the Summer is over. If you’re still trying to think of an idea for a Summer party, we have another great suggestion for you today. Alice in Wonderland has always been a popular story, and the release of the new Alice in Wonderland movie has made it even more popular. If you want to dress up and throw a great summer party, have your friends over for an Alice in Wonderland Tea Party.

Costumes
Alice in Wonderland delighted audiences not only because it was a great story, but also because it had such an intriguing cast of characters. While not all of the characters attended the tea party in the movie, they can certainly attend yours. There should be at least one Alice costume, and a Mad Hatter costume. These two characters play a central role in the movie, and their absence would affect the effectiveness of the theme. There are plenty of other characters that can attend, and there are lots of costumes available including The Queen of Hearts costume and the Cheshire Cat. It is okay to have more than one costume representing a character, as each person can put their own spin on the costume, like this White Rabbit costume and this women’s Mad Hatter costume.

Set-up
If you have a big backyard, put several tables together end to end so that they form one large table. This mimics the set-up of the Mad Hatter’s tea party and will make your guests feel like they’re part of the movie. You can also use some colored streamers throughout the yard to give it a slightly crazy feel. Try tilting hanging plants and other decorations so that they are just a little bit different than normal.

Food
Since this is a tea party, you will probably want to serve tea. You can have have several different tea bags available and each person can make their own, or you can brew a large pot and serve everyone. If it is a hot day, you can also serve iced tea to help keep your guests cool.

Serve plenty of tea snacks like finger sandwiches and other appetizers. Cheese and cracker plates, and just about any other variety plate, make an excellent tea part options. Small cookies and pastries also go well with tea, so you can include those in the menu if you want.

Activities
The Alice in Wonderland movie has plenty of activities that you can draw ideas from. You can set up a croquet course in the yard and have guests compete to see who can get the best score. You can also give each guest a rose, and then let them paint it. If you don’t want to buy roses, you can have a contest to see who can paint the best rose on a piece of paper.

Throwing an Alice in Wonderland party doesn’t require much effort, and you’re free to add your own crazy touches. Your guests will enjoy the fun of being part of a theme and everyone gets to enjoy themselves.

Summer Party Ideas: Greek Party

June 21, 2010

Today is June 21, the first day of summer. While the weather isn’t all sun and fun here in Seattle, there are still plenty of opportunities to have a great time. As the days get longer and the weather warms up (hopefully) parties move from inside to out, and jackets and long pants turn into t-shirts and shorts. In honor of the glorious summer months ahead of us, the next few posts will cover some great summer parties themes that include costumes.

Costumes
Greek and Roman parties, which don’t differentiate much other than in name, make great costume parties because the traditional costume, the toga, is cheap and easy to make. There are several different variations on the toga costume for men and women. Women’s costumes include a Greek Goddess costume and a Roman Empress costume, either of which would be appropriate for a party. Men have slightly more choices, although women are welcome to indulge in these as well, with men’s costumes including Roman Warrior costumes, toga costumes and Spartan costumes if you’re feeling like feeding your alpha male.

Food
Another great thing about throwing a Greek party is the endless amount of delicious Greek cuisine available. Gyros (pronounced yuro) are a popular Greek dish that combines lamb vegetables, feta cheese and tzatziki sauce wrapped in a pita. You can lay all of the ingredients out taco bar style and have everyone make their own.

Greek pizzas are also popular and are usually topped with olives, fresh tomatoes, mozzarella, basil, chick or lamb, feta cheese, onions, peppers and spinach.

If you are feeling adventurous and enjoy cooking, you can also try to make some traditional Mediterranean dishes like cous cous, roasted lamb or Greek salads. If there is a local Greek restaurant they should be able to make suggestions or help you plan a menu.

Tie up those togas and enjoy an evening of eating, laughing and great costumes at a Greek party.

Cool Costume of the Week for 6/18/2010

June 18, 2010

Wow, another week has gone by already and it’s time for another iteration of the Cool Costume of the Week. This week’s cool costume comes to us from Minneapolis,  Minnesota. This PacMan costume is a crazy piece of homemade engineering and sheer costume ingenuity, with movable jaws and built-in speakers that play the PacMan theme song. Most of the materials use to make this costume are easy to find, and they should be available from any neighborhood hardware store. The total costume was estimated to cost around $500, but that included several reworks in the design and not shopping around, so a similar costume could probably be made for less.  Here are a couple of pictures of the finished product.

Check out this link for an almost complete walkthrough of the process with pictures and explanations included.

This is a great costume because it captures the fundamental nature of the character it imitates. Big round yellow body? Check. Chomping jaws? Check. I guess it doesn’t get much easier than that, but I still think this is a stellar costume. One thing to keep in mind when making your own costume is that you don’t have to copy every detail of the character. In this case, there aren’t many details to copy, but in a more complex costume you can often focus more on one or two important aspects of a characters. As Halloween gets closer we’re going to see more and more crazy costumes so check back for our next Cool Costume of the Week.

As an added bonus, here is a video of the mouth moving! Awesome!
