Homemade Vs. Store-bought: Bert & Ernie

Store-bought

We’re going to take a break from our Toy Story profiles to introduce a new column that we’re going to be doing titled Homemade vs. Store-bought. This column is going to compare homemade costumes with those you can buy in the store, so that people reading can make an educated guess on the best route to go. Certain store bought costumes don’t look as realistic as some people want, but getting a costume to look perfect can take hours, and sometimes the personal investment isn’t worth it. Our topic for today is Bert and Ernie, so we’ll look at a few homemade costumes and take a look at the professional costumes that we have in our store.

First we’ll look at the costumes that we offer in our store. We sell a complete Ernie costume that includes everything you need. The headpiece is plush so it should be comfortable and not too hard on the neck. This costume doesn’t take any time to put together, but it may be more expensive than some of the homemade examples. The costume retails for $80.

We also sell Bert and Ernie Masks if you are interested in saving money and finding the clothes yourself. The Masks are $32 each and are similar to the one included with the costume. Buying a mask is a great way to cut down on the cost of a costume if you can find the right clothing at a second hand store. Unfortunately, sometimes the right pattern or design can be tough to find.

There are a couple of differnt ways to go about making your own Bert and Ernie costumes. This costume used foam to make the heads. While this process may be cheaper, it can be very time consuming and one screw up can result in the whole project being ruined.

This costume was made out of cardboard and cloth foam. This is a simpler process and may be cheaper than purchasing a costume or carving the head out of foam.
