The summer of 2010 saw some great movies released, and some even better summer movie costumes. Let’s take a look back at the the movies that made us say “Wow,” and had us itching to try on the best summer movie costumes.
Alice in Wonderland
Directed by Tim Burton, this remake of the classic Disney movie, and the even older book by Lewis Carroll, starred Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter, Mia Wasikowska as Alice, and Helea Bonham Carter as the Red Queen. The movie received mixed reviews, but was praised for its inspiring visuals, notably the costume designs by Colleen Atwood. Atwood has worked with Burton several times in the past. One problem with consumer costumes based on such visually appealing movies is that costumes usually fall flat when compared to what you see on the screen. In the case of Alice and Wonderland, the costume makers did an awesome job creating affordable costumes that accurately reproduce the movie counterparts. Alice in Wonderland costumes, particularly the Mad Hatter costume, are already big sellers, and as Halloween approaches they’re likely to continue to fly off the shelves.
Iron Man 2
Iron Man was a huge hit, and Iron Man 2 performed equally well, giving summer movie goers another visual feast with a redesigned Iron Man costume that was sleeker and more decked out than the predecessor. Robert Downey Jr. returned to his role as Tony Stark, the billionaire inventor turned superhero. Iron Man 2 performed well at the box office, and fans went rapid for an accurate movie costume. Several different versions were produced, including a collector’s Iron Man 2 costume that you would swear is the real thing. Iron Man costumes are hot sellers with kids and adults, and with the Avengers Movie slated for release in 2011, its sure to remain a popular choice.
Robin Hood
Ridley Scott, of Gladiator fame, once again teamed up with Russel Crowe for this action packed period piece, which featured a big budget and amazing costumes. The film garnered high praise for its artistic costumes and sets, but fans felt the story failed to build upon Robin Hood’s legacy. Despite the criticism, Robin Hood is worth seeing if you’re a costume fan, as Janty Yates’ costume’s bring the film to life. Yates previously worked alongside Scott and Crowe in Gladiator, and also worked on several successful films set in the present day. Robin Hood costumes are popular couples costumes due to the strong connection between Robin Hood and Maid Marian, and because the simple design offers great mobility for a party or night out.
Toy Story 3
Toy Story 3 produced some of the most popular summer movie costumes without even featuring any costumes in the film. Toy Story 3 was on of the most successful films of the summer, and it further proved that Pixar has the ability to continually produce blockbuster movie after blockbuster movie. Several fans reported that they cried when the film was over. The Toy Story franchise is immensely popular with kids, and that has helped to make Toy Story 3 costumes one of the biggest sellers of the year. Toy Story costumes are also popular with adults, whether its to impress the kids or a guilty pleasure is hard to say. The Toy Story characters appeal to a wide audience, at least as far as their costumes are concerned, because the designs are simple, but they also have a certain coolness about them. Buzz’s chest plate with extend-able wings isn’t so cutesy that older kids can’t enjoy it, and it isn’t so complex that younger children will struggle with all of the moving parts. With Halloween just around the corner, and the movie performing so well in theaters, Toy Story 3 costumes will continue to be big sellers.
