Fancy Dress Costumes for Halloween

Fancy Dress costumes are great Halloween costumes because they can often be worn well beyond the Halloween season. There are several different fancy dress costumes to choose from, depending on the style that you are looking for.

Disney Fancy Dress Costumes

cinderella costume
Disney princesses are famous for their extravagant gowns, the envy of young girls everywhere (okay, some older girls like them too). These dresses do double duty, as they can be used to imitate a specific Disney character, or as a nice dress for any occasion. When selecting a Disney princess fancy dress costume, your main concern should be the color. For example, Belle’s dress is bright yellow, while Cinderella’s dress is powder blue. Most of the Disney princesses are associated with a color, and that color will help you stand out if you’re planning a specific costume.

Southern Fancy Dress Costumes

The Southern fancy dress costumes capture the elegance and style of the 1800 and 1900’s. These high quality dresses make great period pieces for plays and theater, and also make a great couple’s costume for a costume party. Make sure to add a Southern gentleman to complete the look.

Historic Fancy Dress Costumes

If Disney isn’t your thing, and the Southern look just isn’t for you, then you may want to consider a historic fancy dress costumes. These costumes hail from medieval times and older. Historic fancy dress costumes also make great party costumes and can be paired with another period costume for a couple’s costume. There are an almost limitless number of choices, including medieval time, Egyptian themes, Renaissance themes and much more.

Cool Costume of the Week

September 27, 2010

We’ve seen quite a few superhero costumes here at the Costume City blog, and we’re likely to see more as we get close to Halloween, but there are still some creative people out there who continue to put a new spin on classic costumes like this great Spider-Man costume. Spider-Man has always been a popular hero, and his simple costume has been worn by kids, and adults, all over the world. Different variations, including the Black Suit Spider-Man, have popped up, but I haven’t seen one like this before.

Spiderman costume

I like a few different things about this costume. First off, it doesn’t hide the entire face. While some people might not like this, I’ve always found wearing a mask to be stifling. I’m not sure how Spidey pulls it off, but having cloth over your face really makes it hard to breathe. Another thing that I like is how recognizable this Spider-Man costume is. Anyone who has read a Spider-Man comic, or seen the TV show, will be able to recognize the Spider Sense going off. Finally, and this really has nothing to do with the costume, this guy actually looks like Peter Parker. Where was he when Columbia Pictures was casting for the Spider-Man movies?

You don’t have to look like the person that you’re trying to imitate to pull of a costume, but it certainly helps. This guy didn’t have to buy a ton of fancy makeup for his costume, and most of the outfit could probably be found at a thrift store. As I’ve said before, the key to a good homemade costume is to pay attention to the defining characteristics. This Spider-Man costume uses the camera, the mask, and the little lightning bolts to define the character.

Check out our site for more great Spider-Man costumes to get your Spider Sense tingling.

Thanks to for the picture.

2010 Movie Costumes

The past year has been a great time to be a movie costume fan, with some great work done on Alice In Wonderland, Ironman 2, Robin Hood and even Toy Story 3. Avatar has also inspired a whole line of Halloween costumes even though it was released last year. Anyone from the cast of Toy Story 3 would make a good Halloween costume idea, and you can also try to mimic some of the less popular characters like Hamm, Rex and Slinky Dog. Alice In Wonderland costumes have also been selling like crazy, and you can’t argue with the coolness of Johnny Depp’s Mad Hatter costume.

Lady Gaga Costumes

Love her or hate her, Lady Gaga is known for her outlandish costumes, and you can expect to see lots of people out on Halloween dressed like her. Part of the fun of dressing up like Lady Gaga is that you can try to imitate her exactly, or you can have a little fun and create your own Lady Gaga look. If want to make your own outfit, be sure to add a few Gaga touches like giant sunglasses or straight platinum blonde hair so that people will recognize you.

Comic Book Costumes

Superhero movies like Ironman 2, Spider-Man 3 and Batman: The Dark Knight have helped to make comic book costumes more popular than ever. Kids aren’t the only ones who are hoping to feel super, adult superhero costumes are selling just as well. If you’re looking for a superhero costume but don’t want to dress up just like everyone else, think about looking ahead to next year for great costumes like the Green Hornet, Thor and Captain America.

Disney Costumes

Disney Princesses continue to be a popular choice for adults and kids, and with the release of The Princess and the Frog last year, young girls have even more costumes to choose from. Disney Princesses make great Halloween costume ideas because they’re fun to wear year round and the Disney movies always send a positive message. There are also lots of different versions of each costume available, and if your family wants to dress up together, one person can dress up as the villain and another as Prince Charming.

Lil’ Animal Costumes

Lil’ Animal costumes are specifically for babies, but they’re so cute that it’s worth looking at them anyway. The Lil’ Animals costumes are affordable baby costumes that provide a comfortable fit for your baby in lots of crazy styles like the Lil’ Lobster costume and the Lil’ Wabbit costume.

Still Stumped?

Everyone at Costume City loves the new food costumes that are coming up. Nothing is funnier than showing up to a Halloween party dressed up like a hot dog. Another great Halloween costume idea is to dress up with someone else, giving your costume twice the punch it would have alone. Some cool partner ideas include Hansel and Gretel, Red Robin Hood and the Big Bad Wolf, Batman and Robin, and just about any other famous duo you can think of. You can also pair objects that go together, like a fork and spoon, if you’re looking for quirky

Best Summer Movie Costume

September 8, 2010

The summer of 2010 saw some great movies released, and some even better summer movie costumes. Let’s take a look back at the the movies that made us say “Wow,” and had us itching to try on the best summer movie costumes.

Alice in Wonderland

Directed by Tim Burton, this remake of the classic Disney movie, and the even older book by Lewis Carroll, starred Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter, Mia Wasikowska as Alice, and Helea Bonham Carter as the Red Queen. The movie received mixed reviews, but was praised for its inspiring visuals, notably the costume designs by Colleen Atwood. Atwood has worked with Burton several times in the past. One problem with consumer costumes based on such visually appealing movies is that costumes usually fall flat when compared to what you see on the screen. In the case of Alice and Wonderland, the costume makers did an awesome job creating affordable costumes that accurately reproduce the movie counterparts. Alice in Wonderland costumes, particularly the Mad Hatter costume, are already big sellers, and as Halloween approaches they’re likely to continue to fly off the shelves.

Iron Man 2

Iron Man was a huge hit, and Iron Man 2 performed equally well, giving summer movie goers another visual feast with a redesigned Iron Man costume that was sleeker and more decked out than the predecessor. Robert Downey Jr. returned to his role as Tony Stark, the billionaire inventor turned superhero. Iron Man 2 performed well at the box office, and fans went rapid for an accurate movie costume. Several different versions were produced, including a collector’s Iron Man 2 costume that you would swear is the real thing. Iron Man costumes are hot sellers with kids and adults, and with the Avengers Movie slated for release in 2011, its sure to remain a popular choice.

Robin Hood

Ridley Scott, of Gladiator fame, once again teamed up with Russel Crowe for this action packed period piece, which featured a big budget and amazing costumes. The film garnered high praise for its artistic costumes and sets, but fans felt the story failed to build upon Robin Hood’s legacy. Despite the criticism, Robin Hood is worth seeing if you’re a costume fan, as Janty Yates’ costume’s bring the film to life. Yates previously worked alongside Scott and Crowe in Gladiator, and also worked on several successful films set in the present day. Robin Hood costumes are popular couples costumes due to the strong connection between Robin Hood and Maid Marian, and because the simple design offers great mobility for a party or night out.

Toy Story 3

Toy Story 3 produced some of the most popular summer movie costumes without even featuring any costumes in the film. Toy Story 3 was on of the most successful films of the summer, and it further proved that Pixar has the ability to continually produce blockbuster movie after blockbuster movie. Several fans reported that they cried when the film was over. The Toy Story franchise is immensely popular with kids, and that has helped to make Toy Story 3 costumes one of the biggest sellers of the year. Toy Story costumes are also popular with adults, whether its to impress the kids or a guilty pleasure is hard to say. The Toy Story characters appeal to a wide audience, at least as far as their costumes are concerned, because the designs are simple, but they also have a certain coolness about them. Buzz’s chest plate with extend-able wings isn’t so cutesy that older kids can’t enjoy it, and it isn’t so complex that younger children will struggle with all of the moving parts. With Halloween just around the corner, and the movie performing so well in theaters, Toy Story 3 costumes will continue to be big sellers.

Who Knew Mice Could Sew?

September 1, 2010

Disney has a way of making people laugh without resorting to slapstick humor, at least not too much, and this video is the perfect example. If you don’t know the context, Cinderella has been forced to spend all of her free time doing chores so she won’t be able to finish sewing her dress for the ball. Lucky for her she has some very talented mice friends who happen to have outstanding sewing ability, in addition to a knack for putting together a catchy musical number. Watch and try not to giggle out loud at Gus.

If you’re feeling like putting together your own Cinderella outfit, and you don’t have any mice to help you, we’ve got plenty of choices. Check out these Cinderella costumes for inspiration, or to purchase one for yourself or a family member. Cinderella costumes are great for young girl’s with active imaginations who want to play dress-up, and they can be fun costumes for parties too.

There are tons of Halloween costumes available at Costume City, including Disney Princess costumes and more.

Cool Costume of the Week

August 20, 2010

It’s cute, it’s adorable, it’s baby Godzilla! A costume doesn’t have to be super elaborate or require specialty construction skills to make it as the cool costume of the week. Sometimes all you need is a little originality and a really cute baby.

Cool Baby Costume

Someone check that kid's food!

Dragon costumes are actually really easy to make, all you need is a green jumper and a little bit of light green fabric for the stomach. Adding the teeth, eyes, ears and spikes are bonus, but they really do make the costume look good. This baby costume doesn’t differ much from others except that the parents went ahead and accessorized with a flame throwing pacifier. This is the sort of extra touch that can really make a costume stand out. Another cool idea would have been to stick a toy knight on the pacifier or give the kid a little plush knight to mangle and chew on.

Throw A Toy Story Party

August 6, 2010
Buzz Lightyear

Buzz Lightyear to the rescue!

In case you’ve been  stuck in a toy chest, Toy Story 3 is one of the biggest hits of the year. To celebrate the movie’s success and to pay tribute to one of America’s favorite franchises, why not throw a Toy Story Party? It’s easier than you think.

Decorating is simple, just make the party room look as much like a kid’s room as possible. If you have kids, or if you rent or borrow some, have them draw pictures with crayons. Hang the pictures on the wall but make sure that they’re hanging at funny angles. You can also put up Space Ranger and Cowboy posters like the ones Andy has in the movie. Streamers are a colorful decoration that you can put up to add a little bit of playfulness to a room.

Toys don’t eat, but your guest certainly will want to. Start with toy themed foods like these awesome Play Dough Cookies. Other good snacks to set out include colorful candies like Skittles and M&Ms, and general party food like chips and salsa (not everything you serve has to be toy themed).

If you want to serve pizza, you can make your own box or at least just tell everyone that it is delivered from Pizza Planet, Andy’s favorite pizza place in the movie. You can also serve burgers, hot dogs or french fries with alien (green) ketchup from Heinz.

If you’re feeling up to it, or if there aren’t too many guests, you can have each person make their own Mr. Potato Head. This involves buying several potatoes, luckily they are cheap, and baking them before hand. Using different toppings you can make pieces to add to the potatoes. Olives can be used for eyes, sour cream can make a toothy smile, and a nose can be made out of a piece of green onion. These are just a few examples and you can probably think of more. This also makes a great activity if you need something for the guests to do for a few minutes.

There are lots of activities that you can plan for a Toy Story Party, and most of them are inexpensive as well as fun.

Pin the Badge on Woody
Print up a blown-up picture of Woody. You can do this at a print shop, or you can enlarge the image on your computer and print it out onto several sheets of paper. Hang the image on the wall. In order to protect your paint or wall paper, consider mounting the image on a piece of wood or cardboard. Give each of the participants a paper badge, have them write their name on it, and then blindfold them and see if they can stick the badge in the right spot with a piece of tape. Be sure to place Woody at an appropriate height for your guests.

Toy Story Etch A Sketch

Etch A Sketch Competition

Etch A Sketch Competition
This activity may cost a little more than the others, but you can do it with only one Etch A Sketch if you want to save money. Have an image, an easily recognizable character like Woody or Buzz works well, that everyone can try to duplicate. You can set-up the Etch A Sketch at a table and have guests come and try their hand at making a copy throughout the party. The goal is to Etch the best recreation of the image. You can leave a camera at the table so that people can record their work. Having a prize for the best drawing is a great way to get people to participate.

Army Men Hunt
Remember those little Green Army Men from when you were a kid? If you’ve still got them, now is a great chance to use them for a fun game. If you don’t have any, they are readily available at toy stores and online. Designate an area, either a room, an enclosed yard, or the whole house, as the area for the game. Before the party guests arrive, hide as many army men as you want in the area. The more army men you hide the longer the game will take. Have each person collect as many army men as they can, with the winner getting a prize. You can also have the contestants keep the army men, meaning that the most successful hunter will get the most army men.

Toy Story Costumes
No Toy Story party would be complete without a visit from the Buzz or Woody. These Buzz Lightyear Costumes and Woody Costumes are perfect for a guest appearance, and there are also plenty of other Toy Story costumes available if everyone wants to dress up.
